Hull Jazz Festival Winter Edition

14 - 17 November 2018

We’re back for our Winter Edition 2018, with two incredible headline shows and a programme that showcases the diversity of the jazz scene right now.

Dame Evelyn Glennie MBE is one of the world’s best-known solo percussionists. We’re delighted to welcome her to Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 17 November with the thrilling young Scottish ensemble Trio HLK.

Over at Hull City Hall on Saturday 17 November, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the phenomenon that was Trojan Records, with Jazz Jamaica All Stars: The Trojan Story.   Desmond Dekker’s Israelites, Eric Donaldson’s classic Red Red Wine and Harry J All Stars’ Liquidator and a whole lot more, performed by a stellar line-up led by Aswad founder Brinsley Forde. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to rock steady!

Rising star Laura Jurd brings her band Dinosaur to Hull Truck Theatre for the first time on Thursday 15 November, with their electrifying synth-pop-meets-jazz-band sound. And Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint makes a very welcome return to Hull on Friday 16 November with his Allstar 5tet and their acclaimed new project Brother Raymond.

What would have happened if Django Reinhardt met tango maestro Astor Piazolla? Argentinian guitarist Gonzalo Bergara embraces both influences and his style’s been causing ripples in the jazz guitar scene. He brings his quartet to Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 17 November, with Hull-born Matt Holborn on violin.

Singer and songwriter Juliet Kelly has been hailed as one of the UK's finest jazz voices. She’ll be joined by the Hull Junior Choir in the latest of our popular fun-filled afternoon shows for all the family. We’ve got two afternoon shows at the Albemarle on Saturday 17 November, with plenty of chance for audience participation!

Finally, Paul Taylor and John Robinson bring together a company of eight local artists to pay tribute in words and music to the Hull Pals of WW1, marking the centenary of the end of the war. They open the festival on Thursday 14 November with Other Ranks.
